Learning Outside the Classroom... and Inside the Alpaca Barn!

Today, our older students traded their desks for a barn and spent the day volunteering at the Alpaca Owners Association National Show! 🦙

The day began with an important job: helping farmers unload alpacas from trailers and get them safely settled into their pens. It was hands-on work that required teamwork, responsibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever help was needed. As it turns out, welcoming a barn full of fluffy VIPs is no small task!

Beyond the work, students had the opportunity to learn directly from the people who know alpacas best. They chatted with breeders and farmers, learned about the care and management of these unique animals, and discovered what judges look for when evaluating show alpacas. (Spoiler alert: it's about much more than a good haircut!)

One of our favorite discoveries? Alpacas have soft, padded feet instead of hooves, which allows them to move gently across grasslands without causing damage to the ground. Nature's own environmentally friendly footwear!

Experiences like this are a perfect example of what makes learning come alive. Students weren't just reading about agriculture, animal science, entrepreneurship, or responsibility—they were experiencing it firsthand, asking questions, solving problems, and making real-world connections.

We're grateful to the Alpaca Owners Association and the many farmers who welcomed our students, shared their knowledge, and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at this fascinating industry.

Because sometimes the best lessons don't happen in a classroom.

Sometimes they happen surrounded by alpacas.
